“A backlink is created when one website mentions another website and connects back to it.”
Generally speaking, the more high quality backlinks you have, the higher you will rank in the SERPs for your target keywords.
They are one of the most important signals that search engines use to determine how to rank websites.
Everyone here has used search engines before. Most likely Google.
You go to Google, type in your search phrase / query and browse through the results, hoping to find EXACTLY what you are looking for.
Based on your search query, the search engines will display a variety of results from their search index database using very complex algorithms that look at hundreds of ranking factors to display the best and most relevant results possible.
They curated these search indexed by crawling (and re-crawling) billions of webpages in order to match relevant content with search queries in their index.
Back in the 90’s these results were absolutely horrendous as the algorithms were very simple and didn’t have much to go on.
Quality search results were quite rare, as keyword stuffing was the go-to practice back then – and IT WORKED
As a result, you really had to dig through all of the results to find what you were looking for.
But not for long…
… because in the year of 1996 Google’s founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin drafted their first outline of the so-called PageRank system as part of a research project at Stanford University.
Okay, cool story, bro. But what the heck is PageRank?
PageRank was a system to organize the world wide web based on specific factors (mostly link based). The PageRank system looked at the quality and quantity of backlinks that are pointed to a website and then determined how authoritative that website is. Based on these ranking factors Google could then rank sites that they deemed authoritative on a certain topic for specific search queries.
